The CWC will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2022 since its 1997 entryinto-force. The accomplishments of its implementation agency, the OPCW, have been many including safe and verified elimination of over 70,000 metric tons of chemical agents and millions of weapons in eight declared possessor states. However, recent uses of deadly chemical agents in Syria and assassination
attempts in Malaysia, Russia, and Britain have presented new challenges to building a world free of a whole class of WMDs. This article will briefly cover this history and point toward new priorities for strengthening this important abolition regime.
