Iran as a Regional Power: Flexibility and Constraints
Few states have achieved such rapid prominence from a position of relative obscurity as has Iran in recent years. This dramatic upsurge in Iran’s international role has resulted from conscious decisions by its leadership since 1973 to use the quadrupled monetary revenues from its oil exports for speedy economic development and the acquisition of a vast arsenal of conventional arms.
