The China–Russia Relationship: The Dance of the Dragon and the Bear

As part of the Global Power Shift series of Springer, Robert Hamilton’s The China–Russia Relationship: The Dance of the Dragon and the Bear provides a current and fact-based analysis of Sino–Russian relations in the face of growing great-power rivalry. Retired US Army general Hamilton, who specialises in Eurasia at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, avoids the familiar argument of whether the cooperation is a strong strategic alliance or just an ‘axis of convenience’. Rather, he suggests that the connection is ‘complex, dynamic, and contingent’ (p. vii) and that the best way to understand it is to engage with people on the ground in areas where both forces have substantial claims.
