The chapter examines patterns and trends of the surge in irregular migration to the United States. Touching upon the transnational networks that facilitate undocumented migration, such as the ‘donkey route’, the chapter situates this phenomenon against the backdrop of policy shifts and responses from both countries to develop a broader understanding of the interplay between migration governance, economic aspirations, and bilateral relations.
