Defence exports are rapidly emerging as a major component in India’s external engagements. While still being one of the top importers of defence equipment in the world,1 India is trying to boost indigenous defence manufacturing through the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) programme. This programme is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on defence imports as also giving a boost to defence exports.2 The objective of this commentary is to analyse the role of India’s defence exports with respect to the Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) doctrine.
