According to reports, US Army Chief of Staff Ray Odierno has said that China and Japan must enhance communication to avoid “miscalculations” amid a simmering territorial dispute over islands in the East China Sea. The General stressed on the need for dialogue between the two countries and said that, “We do have a treaty with Japan, a defense treaty, but the most important piece is that we in fact emphasize the importance of this continued dialogue to solve this problem.” The US General is on a visit to China where he has held talks with Chinese military officials aimed at establishing a formal high-level dialogue between the US and Chinese armies in the coming months. 1
In another development, according to reports, Germany’s defense ministry is planning to reduce its order for Eurofighter jets from 180 to 143. Out of the total order, more than 100 jets worth around €14 billion euros ($19.2 billion) have already been delivered. Germany has been focusing on other air force and defense requirements over the last 10 years and the decision to reduce the numbers should be seen in this context. 2
