  • According to reports, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a telephone conversation with his British counterpart William Hague on November 3, wherein they discussed the situation in Syria and preparation of Geneva II conference on the resolution of the Syrian crisis. 1

    Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a telephone conversation with his Italian counterpart Emma Bonino wherein they discussed the situation in Syria and bilateral cooperation. 2

    Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has said that Russia will hand over four S-300 air defence units to Belarus to help the country build up its air defence capability. 3

    Reports noted that the Defence Ministries of Russia and Belarus are developing a programme for the improvement of the facilities of the military infrastructure. This includes planning for use of regional armed group, development of joint and control systems, intelligence, air defence, communications and radio-electronic warfare. 4

    Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during his official visit to Greece, has discussed a range of bilateral issues along with developments in Syria, Iran and Egypt. With Greece expected to assume Presidency of EU in 2014, Russia-EU partnership was also discussed. 5

    Russia and Nicaragua have signed a memorandum of cooperation during a visit to Nicaragua by a Russian delegation, headed by Secretary of Security Council Nikolai Patrushev. This will allow the two countries to coordinate positions on the main issues of international security6.

    Russian President Vladimir Putin has met with vice-chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, Colonel-General Xu Qiliang wherein they discussed military-technical cooperation between the two countries. 7

    President of Ecuador Rafael Correa Delgado has paid an official visit to Moscow. The two countries have signed a credit agreement for the construction of a Termogas Machala thermal power station in Ecuador along with a number of documents relating to trade and culture. 8

    In other developments, according to reports, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Eduard Stavitsky has said that Ukraine will settle its debt to Russia’s natural gas monopoly Gazprom for gas deliveries. It was reported that dues worth US$ 882 million is pending for natural gas supplied in the month August of 2013. 9

    Reports noted that as part of the 2+2 format talks held in Japan on November 2, involving the Foreign Ministers and Defence Ministers of Russia and Japan, the two nations have discussed a range of issues. These include trade and investment, peace treaty, cooperation between their ships in Gulf of Aden to fight piracy and terrorism and global developments of mutual concern. 10
