India and Kyrgyzstan to take steps to enhance defence co-operation; India successfully conducts a second test flight of its indigenously developed nuclear-capable ‘Agni-V’ long-range ballistic missile

  • According to reports, the Kyrgyz Minister of Defence Major General Taalaibek Omuraliev was on an official visit to India from 11 to 15 September, 2013. The defence minister of Kyrgyz Republic held a meeting with his Indian counterpart AK Antony. Both Ministers discussed a range of issues of mutual interest concerning bilateral defence cooperation and also shared views on security issues. Both sides reaffirmed their desire to further enhance bilateral defence cooperation in areas of interest such as training, UN Peacekeeping and defence industry cooperation. The two countries also agreed to take steps to enhance cooperation between the Armed Forces of both countries.1
    In another development, according to reports, India on September 15 conducted a second test flight of its indigenously developed nuclear-capable ‘Agni-V’ long-range ballistic missile. The missile was successfully tested for its full range of 5,000 km. The launch of the nuclear weapons capable Agni-V has demonstrated India’s capability in firing an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). The Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister and Director General of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO, Avinash Chander has said that "the country has established ICMB capability with the successful second test." He also added the missile would be inducted into the Indian Army in a couple of years after few more trials. The three-stage, nuclear capable weapon Agni-V has the capability to carry over a 1,000 kg warhead over a distance of 5,000 km. 2
