  • According to reports, Teesta river water-sharing, Tipaimukh power project and implementation of land boundary accord were among a range of bilateral issues which figured in discussions between Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's advisers and four federal Indian ministers including, Power Minister M Veerappa Moily, Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on September 6 in New Delhi. National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon was also present during the meeting. The advisers also called on Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and greeted him on his election as the head of state and also conveyed greetings from Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. 1
    Reports noted that Foreign Minister Dipu Moni left the country on September 3 on a week-long visit to meet maritime experts and state department officials in the United States of America and attend an international fair in China. 2
    Meanwhile, Melanne S Verveer, a top US diplomat, arrived in Dhaka on September 6, 2012 on a five-day visit as part of the Obama administration's efforts to promote policies on women's issues and peace and security in Bangladesh. 3
    In other developments, according to reports, Bangladesh has the recorded steepest fall in its competitiveness since 2003-04 in a global survey due to a weakening of public sector institutions' performances, poor infrastructure, deteriorating economic stability and financial sector efficacy. The country lost 10 positions to touch 118 out of 144 countries in the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) 2012-13, said the World Economic Forum (WEF) in its annual Global Competitiveness Report published on September 5, 2012. 4
    Reports noted that after a 12-month respite of declining food inflation, it went back up in August partly due to a rise in prices of essential commodities during Ramadan and Eid festival. Food inflation increased 0.80 percentage points to 7.1 percent in August, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics said in a statement on September 5, 2012. The rise is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. 5
    According to reports, the Climate Change Fund Trustee Board approved four projects of different government agencies involving Tk 62 crore to fight impacts of climate change. The trustee board approved these projects at a meeting at the environment and forests ministry. 6
