  • According to reports, a suicide bomber has attacked a funeral ceremony in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, killing at least 25 civilians including the son of a district governor. Several hundred villagers and officials were attending the funeral of an influential tribal elder in the remote border district of Dur Baba. The district governor Hamesha Gul was among 30 people injured.1

    In another development, according to reports, the Afghan government, on September 4, said that it expected to take full control next week from the United States of the controversial Bagram prison, which numbers Taliban fighters among its 3,000 inmates. President Hamid Karzai’s office made the announcement following talks with some of Afghanistan’s most senior justice, defence and intelligence officials. “The transition of Bagram prison to Afghan authority is a great success for Afghanistan therefore a splendid ceremony has to take place on September 10 for its full handover,” the palace announced. 2

    In other development, reports noted that hundreds of Afghan soldiers have been arrested or expelled over a rising number of attacks on NATO colleagues, the Afghanistan’s defence ministry said September 5, 2011. On more than 30 occasions so far this year, members of the Afghan security forces have opened fire on their Western allies, killing at least 45 foreign troops, the majority of them American. Defence ministry spokesman General Zahir Azimi told a news conference that the attacks were “a matter of concern” for the Afghan government. 3
