President Waheed visits China; The Commission of National Inquiry submits its report to the President

  • Reports noted that President Dr Mohamed Waheed departed on an official trip to China on August 31, 2012, to attend the China-Euroasia Expo 2012. During the visit, President Waheed delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the expo, and also met with the Premier of China, Wen Jiabao. Meeting the local media at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport prior to his departure, the President said that the main purpose of this visit was to meet with the leadership of China, in order to facilitate acquiring assistance in the different areas of need for the Maldives. In this regard, the President said that work would be especially focused on marketing the Maldives’ tourism in China. 1 Meanwhile, President Waheed praised China for its policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. The President made this statement in an interview with China’s State Media Xinhua News Agency, as part of his current visit to China. The President said that unlike other influential countries, China looks at the international affairs of small countries such as Maldives from a unique perspective. 2

    In another development, according to reports, the Commission of National Inquiry (CONI), constituted by the President by decree, has presented its final report to President Dr Mohamed Waheed, following the completion of its investigative work. The report was presented to the President by the Co-Chair of the Commission, former Singaporean judge, Justice G Pannirselvam. 3 President Dr Mohamed Waheed said that the Commission of National Inquiry (CONI)’s findings reveal that the change of President in the Maldives on February 7, 2012 was legal and constitutional. 4 President Dr Mohamed Waheed has dissolved the Commission of National Inquiry. 5 Following the presentation of the report, Minister of Home Affairs Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the government would not entertain requests or advice by former President Mohamed Nasheed or international groups to discuss how the government changed. 6
