  • According to reports, a high ranking Chinese Army Officer visiting United States has noted that there is a need to boost a new type of military to military relationship with the United States in order to boost cooperation. 1 In addition Beijing also asserted that it opposes any application of the United States-Japan security treaty with respect to the Diaoyu Island. 2

    Meanwhile, China and South Korea celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Hu Jintao and Lee Myung-bak exchanged messages. 3

    According to reports, Beijing has urged that Tokyo should undertake practical action to improve the bi-lateral relations post the dispute over Diaoyu Island. 4

    Reports noted that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has decided to visit China on August 30-31, 2012, on the invitation of Premier Wen Jiabao. 5

    In other development, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo has argued that Beijing and Moscow should work towards strengthening their cooperation and coordination over strategic issues. 6
