  • According to reports, Maldives President Dr Mohamed Waheed has briefed participants of The Maldives Story, a session organized by the Maldives as a side event at the Rio+20 Summit, on the government’s environment and economic policies. Speaking at the event, the President emphasised on the Maldives’ commitment to making it a countrywide biosphere reserve by 2017. Highlighting the many potential challenges to be faced in achieving this target, the President noted that everyone’s contribution was required in taking this vital step, both financially and technically. 1

    Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that the Maldives can count on the UN for support in consolidating democracy in the Maldives and in the country’s efforts to transform into a low-carbon economy. The Secretary-General made this remark at a meeting with President Dr Mohamed Waheed, on the sideline of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development. 2

    In other developments, President Dr Mohamed Waheed has sent a congratulatory message to Prime Minister-elect of Pakistan, Raja Pervez Ashraf, following his appointment as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. 3 President has also sent a congratulatory message to Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Antonis Samaras, on his appointment as the Prime Minister of Greece. 4
