Talks on Teesta Water Sharing between India and Bangladesh held in New Delhi; Indian Foreign Secretary visits Bangladesh; US Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration visits Bangladesh

  • On June 6, 2011, Bangladesh and India held secretary-level talks in New Delhi to finalise the framework of an interim treaty for sharing the Teesta water in dry season.1 During the talks, issues like the sharing of river waters of Feni, Manu, Muhuri, Khowai, Gumti, Dharala and Dudhkumar, the dredging of Ichamati river and embankment protection work along the common rivers, etc. were also discussed.2 The minister-level talks between the two countries on water resources are to be held in Dhaka.3

    ON June 7, 2011, Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao went on a three-day long official visit to Dhaka to review the bilateral relations between the two countries and in the run up to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's proposed visit to Bangladesh later this year.4

    US Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration Eric P Schwartz went to Bangladesh on June 7, 2011 on a three-day visit to discuss refugee and migration related issues with government officials and representatives of international and non-governmental organizations in Dhaka as well as Cox’s Bazar district.5
