UN Security Council condemns attacks against UN convoy in DRC and Abyei; Four UN peacekeepers captured by Syrian rebels, freed

  • According to reports, the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the targeted attack against a UN military convoy in the province of South Kivu, Democratic Republic which resulted in the death of a Pakistani peacekeeper. The UNSC also called on the DRC authorities to “swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice”. 1

    In another development, the UNSC vehemently condemned the attack on a UN convoy in Abyei which resulted in the death of a peacekeeper from the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The Council, in a statement reiterated its support to the UNISFA and called on all parties in the Abyei area to “exercise maximum restraint, to cooperate fully with the mission, and to use mechanisms they have put in place to facilitate an effective investigation” into the acts of violence”. 2

    In other developments, according to reports, four Filipino UN peacekeepers who were captured on the ceasefire between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights by Syrian rebels were freed. Reportedly, they have been transferred to Israel. 3
