  • Afghanistan’s Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak on May 4 told reporters that a police captain and an Army officer involved in the attempt on the life of President Hamid Karzai were arrested. The intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh had earlier blamed the Al Qaeda for carrying out the attack. Mr. Saleh also called for more pressure to be put on terrorist bases in the tribal areas of Pakistan, where, he noted, the suspects received training and finances1.

In other developments, even as US forces detained 13 suspected militants during a raid in Paktia province on May 6, 2 NATO soldiers were killed in the Sabari district of Khost province on May 7 in an explosion2. Another NATO soldier was killed in an operation near the Pakistani border on May 9.
