  • According to reports, the United Nations human rights office has urged Maldives to repeal the new regulation that provides for death penalty in the country. Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), voiced concern over this new regulation at a press conference on April 29, 2014 in Geneva. 1

    In another development, reports noted that Ambassador of the United States of America to the Maldives Michele J. Sison paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on April 29, 2014. Discussions at the meeting held at the President’s Office were focused on the bilateral relations between the Maldives and the United States, and on ways to further enhance cooperation between both countries, revealed the President’s Office. 2
