China and Russia to carry out joint naval exercises in the East China Sea; Canada sends a platoon to Poland amid rising tensions over the Ukrainian crisis

  • According to reports, China and Russia will carry out joint naval exercises in the East China Sea later this month. According to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua, the drills, to take place off Shanghai, are scheduled for late in the month, The drills are described as regular exercises. This exercise is to be held after the two countries participated in a similar exercise last year off Russia’s Far East coast. 1

    In another development, reports noted that Canada has sent a platoon to Poland on May 2 to reassure its NATO allies in Eastern Europe amid rising tensions with Russia over Ukraine. Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that the approximately 50 soldiers are to take part in US-led military exercises in Swidwin, about 500 kilometers northwest of Warsaw, from May 5 to 9, with a view to enhancing alliance interoperability and readiness. The deployment comes after Canada sent a warship and six fighter jets to the region, as part of NATO’s efforts to step up its defenses in Eastern Europe due to the growing Ukrainian crisis. 2
