President of the State of Palestine Dr Mahmoud Abbas visits Maldives; President Dr Mohamed Waheed sent a message of sympathy to Pakistan President

    According to reports, President of the State of Palestine, Dr Mahmoud Abbas, arrived in the Maldives on April 17, 2012. 1 President Dr Mohamed Waheed met with the visiting President of Palestine, Dr Mahmoud Abbas at his office. 2 During the meeting, President Dr Mohamed Waheed reassured that the Maldives would continue to use its presence in all international organisations, including the UN Human Rights Council, to advocate the cause of Palestine. He made the statement in his speech at the state luncheon held at Kurumba Maldives in honour of the visiting President of Palestine, Dr Mahmoud Abbas. 3

    Further, President Dr Mohamed Waheed noted that international recognition of the State of Palestine was no barrier to the continuation of peace talks. He made this statement while speaking at a joint press conference of President Waheed and Palestinian President Dr Mahmoud Abbas. While recognising that the security of Israel is equally important, President Waheed said that “only a viable and strong Palestine would enable Israel to achieve its own security”. 4

    In other developments, President Dr Mohamed Waheed sent a message of sympathy to President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan following a plane crash near Islamabad killing all people on board. 5
