United States Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, while opening the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference or WIREC 2008, stated that it is imperative to expand the use of renewable energy such as wind power and bio-fuels to reduce dependence on foreign oil and slow global warming. The three day conference gathered representatives from more than 10 governments, corporations and non-governmental organisations. Mr. Negroponte stressed the importance of solar power, wind and bio-fuels in heralding new frontiers in production and accelerating economic growth in a sustainable manner1.
