GoM suggests India Gate as the location for the construction of the national war memorial in Delhi; Biennial naval exercise MILAN 2014 concludes at Port Blair

    Reports noted that a Group of Ministers (GoM), constituted by the Government of India which was headed by the Defence Minister AK Antony had been assigned the task of deciding on the appropriate location for the National War Memorial. The GoM has given its recommendations laying down the broad framework for construction of War Memorial. The Group of Ministers has suggested ‘C’ Hexagon, India Gate as the location for the construction of the memorial. The Ministry of Urban Development is processing these recommendations for approval by the Competent Authority. 1

    In another development, according to reports, biennial exercise of Navies, MILAN 2014 concluded at Port Blair on February 9. Seventeen nations, including India, had come together in MILAN 2014 making it the biggest edition since its inception in 1995. The list of participating nations in MILAN 2014 included Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Thailand. The six day event started on 04th Feb. It was the first time that countries from the western IOR participated including two African nations viz Kenya and Tanzania; island nations of Mauritius, Maldives and Seychelles. It was also the first time that Philippines and Cambodia participated. The six days of engagement included an International Seminar on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR). The exercise is a milestone step towards enhancing the confidence levels for cooperating and building the framework for establishing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for HADR operations. 2
