  • According to reports, the Sri Lankan delegation led by the Plantation Minister and President's special Human Rights envoy Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe left for Geneva to attend the 19th session of the United Nations Human Right Council. The delegation comprises of Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of Irrigation Nimal Siripala de Silva, Minister of Environment Anura Priyadarshana Yapa Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiyutheen and former Attorney General Mohan Peiris.1

    In another development, according to reports, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Alistair Burt has said that the UK still believes that a process led in Sri Lanka is better than one led internationally. He made these remarks while participating in a debate on the situation in Sri Lanka in the House of Commons on February 22, 2012. Commenting on the LLRC report, he said that there is much in the report that can contribute to the pursuit of enduring peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka. 2

    In other developments, according to reports, another 30 illegal migrants who were detained in West Africa's Togo returned to the island on February 25 with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The 30 illegal migrants were part of a group of 209 Sri Lankans who were smuggled out of the country and on their way to Canada via Ethiopia and then Togo. 3
