Defence Budget increases by four per cent

  • The Union Budget 2010-11, presented in Parliament on February 26, 2010 has increased the defence budget by 3.98 per cent to Rs. 1,47,344 crores ($31.9 billion). The percentage growth in the defence budget is however far low compared to the over 34 per cent increase in last year’s budget. While Rs. 87,377 crores (59.3 per cent) has been provided for revenue expenditure, Rs. 60,000 (40.7 per cent) crores has been earmarked for capital expenditure. In percentage terms, the budget stands at 2.12 per cent and 13.29 per cent of the DGP and total central government expenditure respectively.1
