    According to reports, following a court order to arrest former Maldives president Nasheed in order to produce him for a court hearing, he went into the Indian High Commission in Maldives and sought India’s assistance. Nasheed is being prosecuted for the illegal detention of Criminal Court judge Abdulla Mohamed during his presidency.

    Meanwhile, according to reports, Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives D M Mulay has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry on February 17, 2013 to give him a message to be delivered from the Maldivian government to the Indian government, regarding the Indian government’s actions in response to former President Mohamed Nasheed being inside the Indian High Commission since 13 February. Amb. Mulay refused to talk to reporters that approached him as he came out of the Foreign Ministry. 1

    Reports noted that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protesters have called to withdraw charges against former president and MDP presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed, accusing the courts of being unjust regarding Nasheed’s court case. MDP has called for the charges against Nasheed, for the illegal arrest of the Criminal Court judge be withdrawn, while the Prosecutor General’s Office has said that they have no intention of withdrawing the case. 2

    According to reports, Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives D. M. Mulay met with Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group Leader Abdulla Yameen on February 16, 2013 at the PPM office. According to the High Commissioner, the purpose of the meeting was to encourage dialogue among stakeholders to resolve the current situation. 3

    In other developments, Reports noted that Indian naval ship “Kalpeni” went to Maldives to take part in some five days of exercises conducted jointly with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard. The main purpose of the exercises is to conduct maritime security patrol in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Maldives. 4

    According to reports, UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Gabriela Knaul paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed on February 17, 2013 at the President’s Office. The President and the Special Rapporteur discussed measures that could be taken by the government to strengthen the judicial system of the Maldives. 5
