    According to reports, the Election Commission of India has announced elections on March 7 to fill up eight seats of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council which are falling vacant following retirement of sitting members. While four of the seats are from Kashmir province, the rest are from Jammu Province of the state.1

    In another development, reports noted that Muhammed Afzal Guru, convicted in the deadly attack on Parliament
    house in 2001 was hanged on February 9 morning in Tihar Jail where he had been lodged for the past over a decade. The execution came following rejection of his mercy plea by President Pranab Mukherjee on February 3. Afzal Guru was buried at Tihar Jail in Delhi.2

    Meanwhile, according to reports, defying the curfew hundreds of people took to streets at various places in Jammu And Kashmir to protest against the hanging of Afzal Guru. Authorities clamped curfew in Srinagar and other major towns of Kashmir valley on early February 9. 3

    According to reports, five persons were wounded when paramilitary CRPF men allegedly opened fire on protesters in Watergam area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on February 10. The condition of the two injured who were shifted to SKIMS Soura is stated to be critical. 4

    In other developments, reports noted that police have arrested three youth for their alleged involvement in threatening Kashmir’s first all-girls rock band Pragaash. 5
