    According to reports, Commonwealth Secretary General’s special envoy Sir Donald McKinnon has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed on January 27, 2013 at the meeting held at the President’s Office. During the meeting, McKinnon assured of Commonwealth’s support to the Maldives in ensuring a free and fair elections as well as a smooth transition. 1

    In another development, reports noted that Maldives is now in the upper-middle income group of countries, with the Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita income amounting to $6,000 USD. However, President Dr Mohamed Waheed remarked while addressing the people of Kan’ditheemu Island that the income inequality gap of the country has risen, making the rich richer, and the poor poorer. 2

    In other development, according to reports, Vice President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Mr Xiaoyu Zhao paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed on January 22 at the President’s Office. The President and Mr Zhao discussed the current economic and social situation of the country and deliberated on the potential developmental projects that could be undertaken with ADB’s assistance, especially in the areas of fisheries and tourism sectors. 3
