Afghan Defence Minister visits Pakistan; Pakistan’ offer to train Afghan forces being considered

    According to reports, Afghan Defence Minister Bismillah Khan Mohammadi arrived in Islamabad on January 27, commencing a five-day official trip. Leading a six-member delegation, Mohammadi will begin talks with Pakistan’s civil and military authorities on Monday, including Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. The Afghan minister will discuss a range of issues, including security and defence cooperation between the two neighbours. 1

    In another development, according to reports, putting aside years of mistrust, the Afghan government indicated its willingness to consider Pakistan’s longstanding offer of training its armed forces. This sense was conveyed during Afghan defence delegation’s meeting with Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani at the military headquarters. 2
