  • According to reports, President Nasheed met with the Indian and Sri Lankan delegates participating in the trilateral discussion in maritime security in the Indian Ocean region on January 18, 2012. The two meetings were held separately at the President’s Office. 1

    In another development, according to reports, SAARC Secretary General Dhiyana Saeed has decided to tender her resignation from the post. The decision was made after she came under heavy criticism from President Mohamed Nasheed's Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair, following her participation in a news conference to condemn the recent arrests of Vice President of DQP Dr. Jameel and the Chief Criminal Court Judge Abdulla Mohamed. Zuhair had also accused Dhiyana of violating the SAARC charter. This would be the first time a SAARC Secretary General has resigned from the post. 2

    In other developments, reports noted that Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Aslam Shakir met with Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Department of State, South and Central Asia Affairs Dr Alyssa Ayres. During the meeting State Minister Shakir highlighted the need for judicial reform, claiming that the current judicial system “has not lived up to international norms and obligations”, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs read. 3
