  • Reports noted that the UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a debate later this month on strengthening strategic cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations, with the current president of Council calling for closer ties to help deal with issues such as conflict resolution. Some of the issues expected to emerge during the debate include cooperation between the UN and the African Union (AU) in Somalia and the work of a joint team examining the implications of the last year’s conflict in Libya for countries in West Africa. 1

In another development, the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council expressed grave concern at the deteriorating situation inside Syria after an apparent suicide bomb attack in the capital that left many dead or injured. The Council also reiterated its determination to combat all forms of terrorism in accordance with its responsibilities under the UN Charter. 2
