PM Hasina visits to Indian state Tripura; PM Hasina sought assistance from UNICEF; USAID will provide $922 million to Bangladesh

  • Reports noted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Agartala, the capital of Indian state Tripura on January 11 for two days to receive an honorary Doctorate of Literature degree from Tripura University. The visit was the first by any prime minister of Bangladesh to Tripura. Besides attending the convocation on January 12, PM Hasina attended a civic reception and meet with political leaders as well as businessmen. 1 During her visit, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposed that India set up joint venture power plants in its northeastern state of Tripura with Bangladesh in the interest of both Delhi and Dhaka. 2

    In another development, according to reports, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought assistance from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on January 9, 2012 for introducing mid-day meal and school feeding programme to check the dropout of students as well as meet their nutritional demand. 3

    In other develoepmts, reportedly, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide $922 million to Bangladesh over the next five years to help the country address food security, health and global climate change. 4
