    According to reports, the Maldivian cabinet has advised the President to not to issue permits to ports that do not comply with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), to provide port facilities to international ships with effect from January 1, 2013. 1

    In another development, reports noted that Maldives celebrated the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and China on December 26, 2012. President Dr Mohamed Waheed and Madam Ilham Hussain attended the function to at Traders Hotel. Speaking at the function, President Waheed said that in the past 40 years, relations between the Maldives and China had grown from strength to strength. At the function, the Chinese Ambassador, Mr Yu Hongyao also spoke on the close ties that exist between the Maldives and China. 2

    In other development, reports noted that the government of Thailand has donated US$10,000 to the Maldives to assist recovery from severe flooding caused by the cyclone ‘Nilam’ that hit South Asia in late October. The US$10,000 cheque was handed over at a ceremony on December 20, 2012 at the Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka. 3
