Justice J.S. Verma committee holds first meeting; Union Home Minister holds meeting on Telengana issue

    According to reports, Justice J.S. Verma committee constituted to look into possible amendments to the criminal law so as to provide for quicker trial and enhanced punishment for criminals, accused of committing sexual assault of extreme nature against women held its first meeting on 26 December at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The main highlight of the meeting with many other agendas undertaken was that the Committee proceeded to take note of the way forward and is conscious that the work must be completed within the stipulated time-frame. 1

    In another development, reports noted that Union Home Minister Shri Sushilkumar Shinde convened a meeting on December 28 on Telengana issue with the leaders of eight different political parties of Andhra Pradesh. The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Shri Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy and two representatives from each of the political parties attended the meeting and expressed their views to examine the Union Home Minister. The meeting was convened in a cordial atmosphere. The participants expressed the opinion that a decision should be taken by the Central Government at the earliest. Some suggested a period of one month as a time frame for a decision. 2
