  • Japan and the US agreed to seek an early resolution on the controversial relocation plan of the US Marine Corps' base in Okinawa.1 Meanwhile, reports confirming that Washington and Tokyo had signed secret agreements allowing US nuclear weapons to be stationed on Japanese territory were creating problems for both governments in the backdrop of the controversy on Okinawa.2

    Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in a speech at Singapore stated that his government will continue its efforts to build an East Asia community and pledged to follow an Asia-orientated foreign policy. Hatoyama also stressed that the US would continue to play an important role in the region.3

    In other developments, the US welcomed Japan's decision to give up to $5 billion in civilian aid to Afghanistan over the next five years.4
