  • According to reports, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will form an all-party polls-time government by mid-November whether the main opposition BNP joins it or not. To this end, Hasina, also president of the ruling Awami League, will start holding talks with other political parties. As part of the process, she will speak with the leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladesh and Samajtantrik Dal of Bangladesh at Gono Bhaban this evening. The PM wants the election-time cabinet to start functioning under her leadership immediately after the Election Commission announces the polls schedule in the second week of next month. She unveiled the plan at the weekly cabinet meeting at the secretariat on October 28. At the meeting, Hasina told her cabinet colleagues that she wanted the election to be held by mid-January.1

    In another development, according to reports, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pankaj Saran along with his Bangladeshi counterpart in India Tariq A Karim met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Gono Bhaban on October 29 and discussed the latest political situation of Bangladesh. 2

    Reports noted that the United States and Japan have expressed concern over the escalation of violence and deaths across Bangladesh, and called on the ruling and opposition parties to show restraint, and express their views peacefully. 3

    In other developments, according to reports, expressing concern at the violence arising from political turmoil, Canada and China have urged the political parties in Bangladesh to make all possible efforts and use their wisdom to find an agreeable solution for a free, fair and inclusive election. 4

    President Abdul Hamid visited United Kingdom on October 28 on a four-day official visit to attend the 9th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) held on October 29–31. This is his first official overseas visit since he assumed in office on April 24 this year. Earlier, he visited Singapore twice but those were for medical check up. 5
