During the recent annual bilateral security talks held between the defense ministers of South Korea and the US in the Washington DC., the two sides agreed to strengthen military cooperation in areas like space and cyber security to counter North Korean provocation. The two countries will also boost the South’s anti-ballistic missile system and enhance combined capabilities to counter the North’s provocation in the maritime order. 1

In another development, amidst the ongoing territorial dispute across East Asia, South Korean Foreign Ministry has recently announced its plan to submit a formal claim to an extended portion of its continental shelf to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in January next year. The ministry reiterates that the South’s continental shelves ‘naturally’ stretch to the Okinawa Trough in the East China Sea. South Korea is believed to have come up with this plan to counter Japan’s increasing maritime assertiveness in the East China Sea in recent times. 2
