  • While meeting Vincent Siew, the honorary chairman of the Taiwan based Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that the existing political disputes between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan could be resolved gradually. He further said, “We cannot hand those problems down from generation to generation”.1
    During his visit to Malaysia, the Chinese President Xi Jinping met the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. Both sides discussed the bilateral ties and ways to improve China’s relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). They also discussed important regional as well as global issues. A number of cooperation agreements will be signed during the visit. 2
    While visiting Indonesia, according to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China wants to build closer ties and a community of common destiny with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Xi said in an address to Indonesian lawmakers that China is willing to work together with Indonesia and other ASEAN countries to be good neighbors, friends and partners, and jointly build a closer China-ASEAN community of common destiny. He acknowledged that there are differences and disputes between China and some ASEAN countries over territorial sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea, calling for a peaceful solution. 3 The Chinese President also promised to set up an Asian investment bank which would help in regional connectivity of the Southeast Asian region. The primary goal of the bank will be to extend capital help for infrastructure construction in the developing countries of the region. 4
    Following the promotion of the ‘mass line’ campaign, senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Liu Yunshan has urged the Chinese party officials to firmly and competently undertake a campaign to boost ties between the CPC officials, members and the people. 5
    Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei said that China has decided to send a team of experts to join in the inspection and destruction of chemical weapons in Syria. Hong added, “China will provide financial aid in this regard”. 6
    Regarding US-Iran ties, Hong said that China perceives the recent development in US-Iran relations as positive for peace in the Middle East. He added, “We have noticed the efforts that both the United States and Iran have recently made to improve the relationship”. 7
    On the incident of a mortar shell hitting the Chinese embassy in Syria, according to reports, the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed shock and condemned the incident. Hong said in a statement that China strongly urged relevant parties in Syria to abide by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and take concrete measures to ensure the safety of all diplomatic organizations and personnel including those from China. He said China reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire and end to violence in Syria, and for the launch of dialogue to end the crisis and restore national peace and stability. 8
    In other development, according to reports, during the 64th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Li Keqiang said that China remains committed to deepening reforms in the pursuit of long-term and sustainable economic growth despite the difficulties and challenges ahead. Li stated, “China is at a crucial stage of economic restructuring and upgrading, and faces many difficulties and challenges”. But “We will overcome those difficulties and challenges to deepen reform across the board for a long-term, sustainable and sound economic growth and social progress”. He asserted9
    Reports noted that as a part of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA)’s annual military training plan, a cross-regional military drill called Mission Action-2013C started in the Guangzhou province of China at end of September, 2013. 10
