  • Reports noted that Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on October 6 arrived in Ladakh region on a two-day visit where he reviewed the development works. The Union Minister presided over a high-level meeting to review security situation in the area. He also presided over a meeting with the councilors of Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council and officials of the district administration to have a first-hand account of development progress in the area. On the demands, the Home Minister said the airport extension work will be completed within two years while the work on Zojjila Tunnel has started.1

    In another development, according to reports, Police and Army on October 1 informed that five militants have been killed in an encounter with them in Wangat forests of Ganderbal district. Police sources noted that all four of the killed militants were foreigners. 2

    Reports noted that Congress General Secretary and Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi will begin his two day visit to Kashmir Valley on October 4 amid growing differences among ruling coalition partners, National Conference and Congress, over empowerment of Panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir and continued threats to the grassroots representatives. He will be bringing along a powerful business delegation that includes among others Ratan Tata and Kumar Manglam Birla. 3

    In other developments, according to reports, three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured when suspected militants hurled a grenade at their bunker in Sopore town of Baramulla district on October 4 afternoon. 4
