Five Indian peacekeepers killed in South Sudan, UN condemns the killing; India and Germany to intensify efforts for UNSC reform; UN welcomes Yemen’s efforts to restructure security sector

  • According to reports, in South Sudan, five Indian soldiers were killed when the UN convoy they were escorting as part of their peacekeeping operations came under heavy fire from armed rebels. The UN will pay the relatives of victims a grant of US$ 70,000 apart form the compensations to be paid by the Indian government. 1 Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council strongly condemned the killing2 while India’s Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh expressed anguish at the killing. 3

    In another development, India’s External Affairs Minister, Salman Khurshid and his German counterpart, Guido Westerwelle announced that both the countries will jointly intensify efforts through the G4 to gain permanent membership in an expanded UN Security Council. They also said that they would continue to work to strengthen the rule of law at the global level. 4

    In other developments, according to reports, the UN Secretary-General and the UN Security Council welcomed the Yemeni President, Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi’s efforts to restructure the country’s security sector and also called upon all parties to honour the timetable and benchmarks set out in the Transition Agreement. 5
