  • High Commissioner of Cyprus Nafsika Kruest paid a courtesy call on Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed at the President’s Office on March 2011 and discussed upon ways to further strengthen relations between the Maldives and Cyprus. 1

    Meanwhile, President Mohamed Nasheed met with the Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Siraj Shamsuddin on February 28, 2011 at the President’s Office. During the meeting the discussion was centered on the ADB funded development programmes in the Maldives, as well as increasing ADB’s assistance to the Maldives.2

    According to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), USD 7.2 million was collected as Tourism Goods and Services Tax (T-GST) in January. However, Reports noted that 79,459 tourists arrived in Maldives in January and USD 90 was collected by the government per head. 3

    Maldivian Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed has taken office as secretary-general for the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). She is the first woman to hold the post.4

    In other developments, Miloslav Stasek, the new Ambassador of Czech Republic accredited to the Maldives, has presented his letter of credence to President Mohamed Nasheed on March 2.5 However, the new Ambassador of Iraq Kahtan Taha Khalaf accredited to the Maldives has presented his letter of credence to President Mohamed Nasheed on March 6.6
