    Director General, IDSA, Dr Arvind Gupta attended a Roundtable with the Afghan Foreign Minister, Mr Zalmay Rassoul, on May 1, 2012. The Roundtable was organised by the Delhi Policy Group. A detailed briefing was provided by the Afghan Foreign Minister on Indo-Afghan relations and the US-Afghanistan Strategic Partnership concluded recently. Others present in the Roundtable were the Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan, along with several other strategic affairs experts.

    Dr Uttam Sinha, Research Fellow, IDSA, attended the 4th and final meeting on Water Resource Security, organised by the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) in Chiang Rai, Thailand on April 30, 2012. The meeting was organised to prepare a memorandum and summary of meeting for the Steering Committee in June 2012 in Malaysia. Dr Sinha represented CSCAP-India in the meetings.

    A Round Table was organised at IDSA on April 24, 2012 to critique the chapters on Internal Security and Nuclear Issues of the document ‘Non Alignment 2.0’, released a few weeks ago.

    The document has been put together by a group of eight eminent people, including Shyam Saran, Nanadan Nilekani, Sunil Khilnani, Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Rajiv Kumar, Siddharth Vardarajan, Srinath Raghavan and Prakash Menon.

Also present for the interaction was Mr. Mohammed Saqib, Secretary General of India China Economic and Cultural Council (ICEC). The meeting was presided over by Senior Fellow, IDSA, Brig Mandip Singh.

    A delegation from the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat), Bahrain, headed by Dr Muhammad Abdul Ghaffar (Advisor to the HM, The King for Diplomatic Affairs) visited IDSA for an interaction with IDSA scholars on April 19, 2012. The interaction focussed on the current security situation in the Gulf and its impact on India’s relationship with the GCC member states, specifically Bahrain. Director General, IDSA, Dr Arvind Gupta presided over the session.

    Research Fellow, IDSA, Dr Uttam Sinha, who is currently on a visit to Berlin and Munich, from April 16-20, 2012, discussed climate and water issues at the Federal Ministry of Environment in Berlin, on April 19 2012. Dr Sinha is visiting Germany as a part of an Indian delegation on ‘Climate Change and Water Resources’. The visit has been organized by the Hanns Siedel Foundation.

    Research Fellow, IDSA, Dr Smruti S. Pattanaik delivered two lectures for the Masters Program at the South Asian University (SAU) on April 18-19, 2012. Her lectures were on ‘SAARC and the idea of regional cooperation’ and ‘Instruments for Optimising benefits of Regional Cooperation within SAARC: SAFTA, Convention and Protocol on Terrorism and Agreements on Social Issues’ respectively.

    India-Bangladesh relations, bogged down in mutual recriminations and mistrust for years, are slowly but steadily being transformed. Recently, the Bangladesh government publicly honoured a number of Indians for their contribution to the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. Such a gesture was unthinkable a few years ago.
