The piece essentially argues that the increased reliance on the virtual world can prove to be a major boost to China’s digital “Silk Road” ambitions. As India deals with the pandemic, it along with the world must synergise a way to resist Chinese exploitation of the “new normal”. Prime Minister Modi’s “Skill India”, “Make in India” and self-reliance aims must be given added momentum to compete and create alternatives to Beijing’s technological influence to ensure a continued implementation of international standards, security walls and strategic advantages in the increasingly tech-reliant world order.

Amid COVID Pandemic, China Revs Up Its U.S. Strategy

Research Fellow, Manohar Parrikar IDSA, Dr. Jagannath Panda's OpEd on U.S.- China Strategic Competition, titled ‘Amid COVID Pandemic, China Revs Up Its U.S. Strategy’ has been published in Japan Forward on May 18, 2020.

The piece essentially argues that strategic communities in China have always maintained that U.S.-China relations are intertwined in the changing geo-political environment, hence maintaining stable relations has become increasingly difficult. In such a background, Beijing has realized that the current global recession arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic could emerge as a significant game-changer in its strategic competition with the United States in just the way the 2008 global financial crisis contributed to its relations with Washington. In the Chinese outlook, the 2008 global financial crisis exposed loopholes of American soft power by revealing the drawbacks in the Washington Consensus model, originating from a capitalist world framework.

Security Council Seat’ has been published by Japan Forward, the English online edition of the Japanese newspaper, ‘The Sankei Shimbun’, on May 06, 2020.

The Op-ed argues that an asymmetric alignment, while representing a lack of symmetry, must not be taken to mean a lack of balance. However, the North’s deteriorating health care system and its clandestine relations with China and Russia might encourage Pyongyang to disclose the number at some point.
