Pakistan and China sign document on bilateral military cooperation; President Putin postpones Pakistan visit; President Zardari attends 67th session of the UN General Assembly

  • In a significant development, repots noted that Pakistan and China have signed a document for bilateral military cooperation on September 25. According to a press release by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the document was signed during a visit of Chinese delegation led by Deputy Chief of General Staff of People Liberation Army General Ma Xiaotian to Joint Staff Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The delegation met Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman General Khalid Shameem Wynne and discussed ongoing cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries. General Xiaotian appreciated the role played by the people and armed forces of Pakistan especially their efforts against terrorism. He reiterated that the cooperation in different fields between the two armed forces will continue with a renewed resolve and commitment towards each other. .1

    However, in another development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has postponed his maiden trip to Pakistan due to unspecified reasons, according to the foreign ministry. In the first week of October, Putin was to embark on the first-ever state visit to Pakistan by any Russian president. He was also scheduled to attend a quadrilateral summit with leaders from Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. A statement issued by the Foreign Office said the summit, which was planned from October 2-3, 2012, was being rescheduled. .2

    In other developments, according to reports, President Asif Ali Zardari arrived in New York on September 24 to attend the 67th session of the General Assembly of United Nations and hold meetings with heads of state and governments to discuss international and regional situation. .3
