President Rajapaksa visits India; Report: ISI attempts to recruit Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees as spy

  • President Mahinda Rajapaksa made a three day official visit to India on September 19, 2012. President met ndian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In the backdrop of the recent attacks against Sri Lankans in Tamil Nadu, the visiting leader, during his meeting with Mukherjee, also noted that such "unfortunate incidents" should not be allowed to "harm" age-old ties between the two countries. During the meetings, Indian leaders pressed for an expeditious inclusive solution to the decades-long ethnic issue and rehabilitation of displaced Tamils and fishermen issues. On September 21, President Rajapaksa laid the foundation stone for University of Buddhist and India studies in Sanchi, Madhyapradesh in the midst of protest by Tamil Nadu politicians. 1

    In other developments, according to reports, the Tamil Nadu state intelligence has informed Centre's Intelligence Bureau of India that agents of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) are actively attempting to recruit Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who have returned to the island nation after the end of the Eelam war, to spy on India. 2
