  • According to reports, Indonesian anti-terror squad, on September 23, 2012, has arrested ten Islamic militants and seized a dozen homemade bombs from a group suspected of planning suicide attacks against security forces and the government. Eight suspects were arrested on September 22 in Central Java’s Solo town and a ninth in West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, national police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said. He said a 10th suspect, Joko Parkit, was arrested on September 23 in Solo. 1
    Reports noted that Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met President Barack Obama at the White House and received the highest congressional award on September 19, 2012. Suu Kyi, making a coast-to-coast US tour, held private talks with Obama in the Oval Office after being feted by lawmakers in the ornate US Capitol, where she was presented with the Congressional Gold Medal for her long fight for democracy in a country ruled by army generals since 1962. 2
    According to reports, China has become the biggest goods consumer and the second largest export market of Vietnam. Despite the native effects from the global economic slowdown, two-way trade between Vietnam and China rose 20.4 percent in the first seven months of 2012 to approximately US$23 billion. Of the total, Vietnamese exports generated US$7.2 billion, up 25.3 percent, and imports fetched US$15.6 billion, up 18.3 percent. 3
    In other developments, reports noted that Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has bagged the work of Management Consulting Services for building the Phase- I of Jakarta Mass Rapid System in Indonesia. This is the first time that Delhi Metro has got a project outside the country since its inception in 1997. Delhi Metro has been awarded the work in a joint venture with eight other international companies. According to the reports, the main responsibilities of DMRC in the joint venture will be the finalisation of the organisational structure of the Jakarta Metro, recruitment of personnel, development of training facilities and the training of the employees for various categories required for commencing the operations. The DMRC had also prepared the Special Assistance on Project Implementation (SAPI) study for the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit system. 4
    According to reports, suspected Muslim insurgents detonated a car bomb in southern Thailand that killed six people on September 21, 2012 after businesses received warnings against opening on the Muslim holy day. It has been reported that the suspects opened fire on a gold shop in Pattani province's Sai Buri district, hurting no one and fleeing. When security forces arrived at the scene, a bomb hidden in a gas canister in a nearby pickup truck went off. A border patrol volunteer, an administrative official and four civilians were killed. Twelve police officers were among the 44 people wounded. Security officials said the pickup truck containing the bomb had been stolen in a Sept. 7 attack in which three women were killed. Friday's explosion set fire to buildings on both sides of the road in the town's commercial area, damaging rows of wooden shop houses. 5
