  • According to reports, amid complete shutdown, Kashmir Valley on September 18, witnessed intense protests against the anti-Islam film made in the United States. Angry youth fought pitched battles with police and paramilitary forces at several places across the Valley as business establishments, educational institutions and offices remained closed in protests against the blasphemous film. Protests were held across Jammu Division also. The strike call given by several religious and business organizations, including Kashmir Economic Alliance, was supported by Hurriyat Conference (G), JKLF and Kashmir High Court Bar Association. In the summer capital, hundreds of protestors clashed with paramilitary and police forces at many places.1

    In another development, according to reports, at least six paramilitary CRPF men were injured, when a grenade exploded accidentally inside a training center at Nagrota on city outskirts in Jammu on September 20. 2 Meanwhile, Police arrested three Hizbul Mujahedeen militants on September 20 in Pulwama district of South Kashmir while busting a hideout. 3
    Reports noted that after becoming President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee will be on his maiden visit to Kashmir for attending Kashmir University convocation on September 27. 4

    According to reports, J&K has witnessed more than 68,000 incidents of violence in the past 22 years, according to the details furnished by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This means that the state would each day witness eight incidents of violence. The details furnished by the MHA reveal that the State has witnessed 68,708 militancy related incidents from 1990 to July 2012. The details have come to fore in response to an application filed by a Jammu-based activist Raman Sharma under the Central Right to Information Act -2005. According to the information, the State has recorded highest incidents of violence in 1995 (5,938) followed by 1994 and 1993 (5,829 and 5,247 incidents respectively). 5
