  • South Korea, along with the US, has recently decided not to send its government officials to the upcoming Six Nation meeting, to be held in China later this month. Beijing recently took the initiative to hold an informal gathering of scholars and government officials from the five participant states (except North Korea) of the Six Party Talks (Japan, South Korea, the US, Russia and China itself) to discuss the North Korean nuclear issue and revive the SPT. While justifying its stance on the issue, Seoul stated that given North Korea’s current attitude, the time has not yet arrived to hold talks among the government level officials of the SPT states. Seoul however has agreed to send academics privy on North Korea, to the meeting. 1

In another development, the two Koreas, on September 11, agreed to reopen the joint industrial complex-Kaesong-on September 16. This deal is expected to bring an end to the five month long impasse between the two countries over that complex. The issue came to the forefront in April this year with North Korea’s unilateral decision to pull out its own workers from the factory zone in Kaesong. 2
