  • Reports noted that Japanese government has decided to sign a contract to purchase three of the Senkaku Islands (Uotsurijima, Kita-kojima and minami kojima) in the Okinawa Prefecture from their private owner as early as September 11, 2012. The nationalization of the islets will take effect at the time of the signing of the contract. The Noda administration is keen to complete the nationalization process as soon as possible to minimize backlash from China, who claims its own sovereignty over those islets. 1

In another development, the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) has recently proposed for Japan to aim for zero reliance on nuclear energy by the 2030s. This proposal is to be included in the new energy policies that the government will finalize next week. However, to achieve the proposed target, the government will not only have to strictly adhere to its policy of shutting down nuclear reactors after 40 years of operation, but also abandon any plans to build additional nuclear power plants. 2
