  • During a recent Cabinet meeting on August 31, Japanese Prime Minister has emphasized the need to cooperate with the relevant counties, including the US in dealing with the ongoing crisis situation in Syria. Abe has, in the meantime, instructed the cabinet ministers to collect, analyze and evaluate the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government on its own citizens. While holding the Bashar Assad-led government responsible for the massive human rights violations in Syria, Abe has also urged the former to resign.1

In another development, during the recent two-day meeting concluded on August 29 among the defense ministers of the member states of the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting-Plus (ADMM Plus) (including Japan, China and the US), Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera insisted on the necessity of creating a liaison mechanism to avoid maritime clashes among the participant states. Echoing the sentiments of many other member states, Onodera also expressed hope for the early establishment of a legally binding code of conduct in the South China Sea. It is worth noting that during the meeting, a joint statement was adopted that pledged to explore steps to prevent accidental maritime clashes.2
