  • According to reports, two Bangladeshi linkmen of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were arrested in Meghalaya's South West Garo Hills district while attempting to cross over back into their country. Border Security Force (BSF) spokesman Mahendra Singh said that during preliminary questioning the accused have also confessed that they were involved in facilitating cross-border movement of the NDFB rebels. 1

    In another development, according to reports, tension in the Rengma Naga-inhabited areas has not abated yet following the issue of an ultimatum by the Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) to Rengma Nagas, asking them to leave Karbi Anglong district. The Chokihola locality is reportedly tense although there are no reports of any fresh untoward incident. The Rengma Nagas, living in Borlangso, Khirang and Cocheng areas, have been taking shelter at Chokihola. 2

    Reports noted that President Pranab Mukherjee, who is scheduled to arrive in Agartala on June 20, is all set to dedicate the first unit of 726 MW Palatana power project in Tripura to the nation on June 21. 3

    According to reports, after spending more than two years in various jails of Assam, National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) chief Ranjan Daimary walked out of the Guwahati Central Jail on June 23. Daimary is one of the prime accused in the serial blasts that rocked four districts of Assam on October 30, 2008 killing close to 100 civilians. The release of Daimary is expected to expedite the proposed talks between the NDFB and the Indian government. 4

    In other developments, reports noted that the Border Security Force (BSF) has intensified its patrol in communally-sensitive areas along the International border in Garo Hills following communal clashes in West Garo Hills district which left at least one dead. The security arrangements have been tightened after curfew was imposed on June 21 in West Garo Hills following violence. 5

    According to reports, in a night-long operation, six militants suspected to be cadres of NSCN(K) were killed in Manipur’s Tamenglong district in the wee hours of June 23. The incident took place when troops of 10 Assam Rifles spotted the movement of some ultras in the Kangchup area and launched an operation in the hilly terrain close to the Songlung village of Tamenglong district in Manipur. 6
