  • Setting up of specialised Army units to deal with urban terrorism has been proposed after an assessment of the lessons learned during the operations against terrorists who struck in Mumbai on November 26. An official assessment of the operations carried out by the Army’s Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa area headquarters admits that its basic training and equipment does not give it the ability for anti-terrorist operations. The assessment notes that specialised units capable of being deployed in any part of the country in short notice were required. The report also notes that infantry battalions located in important cities need to be equipped with special equipment like stun guns, grenades, close quarter battle weapons, hands-free communication equipment and bullet-proof jackets1.
